APRS is an acronym for Automatic Position Reporting System, which has many uses in Amateur Radio (Ham Radio). The basic idea is that you have a GPS receiver attached to your Ham radio equipment, and as you drive around your position, heading, speed, and some other odds and ends are broadcast to the rest of the Ham community. Some Hams have gone so far as to plug their radio equipment into the internet, and as they receive these position reports from other Hams they automatically submit that information to an online database.
My call sign (NØFHG) can sometimes be tracked online. Two of my favorite APRS websites for APRS tracking are OpenAPRS.org [Bandwidth-intensive site] and APRS.fi.
